Chapter History

In the mid-1970s, Sujette J. Ellis recognized that establishing a local chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated could significantly contribute to the intellectual and cultural development of Scotland and Robeson County areas. With vision and determination, she led the effort alongside 14 dedicated women, supported by the leadership and guidance of the 7th South Atlantic Regional Director, Norma Sermon-Boyd. The Laurinburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered on February 24, 1979.

Immediately, the chapter began implementing programs and projects aligned with the Sorority's Five-Point Programmatic Thrust.  The chapter sponsored its first Jabberwock in 1980, receiving an overwhelming response and support from the community.  The chapter presently continues the tradition of raising funds for scholarships for deserving students in our three-county service area. The chapter continues to uphold the National Five-Point Programmatic Thrust, which focuses on Educational Development, Economic Development, Physical and Mental Health, Political Awareness and Involvement, and Social Action.

The chapter has consistently remained focused on serving residents within its service area, which currently includes Scotland, Richmond, and Robeson (Maxton, Red Springs,  and Rowland) counties. And through the years, the chapter has steadily expanded and now includes more than 60 members.

The chapter has inherited a rich legacy of leadership, excellence, and empowerment to respond to an ever-changing society in our communities. The Laurinburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. looks forward to the future challenges of our present time, community, and sorority.
